Brunei (yellow shirt) will not participate in the group stage of the AFF Cup for the 12th time.

“The pandemic has severely affected Brunei’s preparations for the AFF Cup. Although we have made great efforts to find solutions to overcome difficulties, the epidemic situation is still too complicated at the moment,” said the President of the Football Confederation. Brunei Pengiran Haji Matusin Bin Pengiran Haji Matasan sends notice to the Southeast Asian Football Federation. “We wish AFF every success in the upcoming tournament, and look forward to our team’s participation in the next tournament.”

As planned, Brunei will play a qualifying match against Timor Leste on December 1. The withdrawal of this team will award tickets to the next opponent. Timor Leste will enter Group A with Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar and the Philippines.

AFF President Khiev Sameth said: “We are saddened to receive the news that Brunei will not participate in the tournament. But we fully understand and sympathize with them about the current difficulties. Although we did not see Brunei compete in the tournament. This year, we know they will come back stronger and look forward to their participation in the future.”

In the group stage, the teams compete in a round-robin format, with the first and second team selected.
