Xavi makes Barca debut

Barca held the introduction of new coach Xavi Hernandez on the afternoon of November 8 at the Nou Camp.

Appearing in an elegant black vest, Xavi arrived 20 minutes later than expected. Accompanying him was his wife Nuria Cunillera. Thousands of Barca fans waited in the stands at Camp Nou to welcome the former Barca captain and continuously chanted his name, along with about 12,000 followers via livestream.

“I don’t want to cry but thank the club and the fans so much,” Xavi said. “This is amazing. I can only say one thing. We are the best club in the world and we will win many titles. Barca cannot draw and lose but must win every game.”

The 41-year-old former midfielder then took a photo with Barca’s shirt with President Joan Laporta.

“Welcome back Xavi and his family. What an emotional day,” Laporta said.

The new Barca coach then walked around the field to applaud the fans. He signed autographs and then joined Laporta into the press conference room for an interview.

Xavi will start working from 9/11. The first thing he did was bring back Dr. Ricard Pruna. Pruna worked at Barca for 25 years before moving to Dubai in 2020. He has terminated his current contract and is waiting to return to the Nou Camp at the invitation of Xavi.

Xavi hopes to help Barca get out of the injury crisis. 11 Barca players are sidelined because of fitness problems and after the 3-3 draw with Celta Vigo in La Liga over the weekend, some players argued with the fitness coaches about this issue.

Xavi was born in the city of Terrassa, in Catalonia in 1980. He played for the Terrassa academy at the age of four, and moved to Barca at the age of 11. Since then, Xavi has been with Barca for 24 years as a player, winning 25 professional titles including four Champions Leagues. He was also the mainstay of Spain’s midfield during his heyday, winning two Euros and a World Cup.

In 2015, Xavi switched to Al Sadd, before retiring at the age of 39. He led Al Sadd right after hanging up his boots, helping the team win seven titles.

Barca are ranked ninth in La Liga, and have just fired Ronald Koeman in October 2021.
