Sick Building Syndrome – Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is a term to describe a number of allergies that can affect some office workers in a building and can slowly disappear when they leave.

This condition usually occurs in offices. However, this syndrome can occur in any building.


Some of the symptoms as below can occur in some people who are active in the building for no apparent reason:

  • nauseous
  • irritation of the eyes, nose and throat
  • mental fatigue
  • headache
  • skin irritation
  • dizzy.


It is not known what causes the symptoms.

The variety of symptoms that arise can reduce work efficiency and increase worker absenteeism.

Generally, people with this syndrome feel better after leaving the building although residual neurotoxin effects may occur.

Some of the things that are thought to cause this syndrome can be a combination of the following:

  • poor ventilation or poorly maintained air conditioning system
  • dust, smoke, lint in the air
  • the light is too bright or flashing
  • cleanliness and layout issues, such as overcrowded tables.

SBS also generally occurs in open offices.


Some of the following ways can be done to relieve symptoms during activities:

  • open the vent as wide as possible
  • set the temperature around 18 degrees Celsius and do not change
  • try to avoid stress or pressure
  • take a break from the screen periodically
  • take a break every now and then and get some fresh air.
