Faster charge in just a few minutes

The recently launched Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus and S22 Ultra have started supporting chargers with a maximum capacity of 45W, which seems to be a huge improvement over the previous 25W chargers. However, a 45W charger is not included, so you will have to shell out an additional 50 USD to buy it. But is the 45W charger worth upgrading over the standard 25W charger?

Android Authority conducted a practical and in-depth test, to evaluate the 45W charger on the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The smartphone has a 5,000 mAh battery, and it takes 62 minutes to fully charge using the 45W charger, while to fully charge it with the 25W charger it takes 70 minutes. You can see the difference is not too big.

The new 45W charger supports Samsung Quick Charge 2.0 technology, while the standard 25W charger supports the first generation Fast Charge technology. Both are compatible with the USB Power Delivery PPS standard, which means you can choose another 45W charger without having to buy a genuine Samsung.

Real testing from Android Authority shows that the maximum capacity is 45W when charging only lasts for a minute, most of the time the charging capacity is only 30W. This explains why the full charge speed of the new 45W charger is not much faster than the standard 25W charger.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as maintaining a large charging capacity for a long time can shorten battery life. However, it’s worth mentioning that users won’t get a significant difference if they spend an extra $50 to switch from a 25W to 45W charger.
