Mother of one child is worried about being late for her period after contracting COVID-19

Many people after contracting COVID-19 are affected by physical, mental, and even endocrine problems… Among them are many women who experience lack of menstruation. In some consultation forums for patients with F0, there are many cases where women are worried and send questions to doctors for advice on problems not Point after contracting COVID-19.

Doctor Phan Chi Thanh – Head of the Center for Training and Counseling (National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology) said that during the visit and consultation with doctors, several cases of amenorrhea were encountered after contracting COVID-19 and even some people who were afraid of getting pregnant came to the doctor and did it. Ultrasound to confirm.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa (26 years old, Minh Khai, Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi) said that he contracted COVID-19 from late November 2021, and came back negative in the first week of December. Soon after, he returned to work and his health was basically without major problems.

“I was very worried about my lungs after contracting COVID-19, so I went to the hospital for an x-ray. The results are very good, the lungs are considered beautiful by the doctor. I also don’t have a cough or have any symptoms of insomnia, just a little hair loss and a missed period,” Hoa said.

According to Ms. Hoa, from childhood to childbirth, her menstrual cycle is very regular. Usually every 20th of every month starts, ends about 5-6 days later. However, since being exposed to COVID-19 until now, it has been more than 3 months since she has had her period no longer.

Ms Hoa already has one child and is not planning on having a second one yet, so when she misses her period she worries a lot for fear of “disrupting plans”. She hastily took a pregnancy test, the result was only one line.

At the end of February 2022, after missing her period for 3 months, Mrs. Hoa decided to go to the doctor, had an ultrasound and the result was still not pregnant. Here, the doctor suggested that maybe due to an endocrine problem, she had amenorrhea and needed to be thoroughly examined and tested to be sure.

Not only endocrine, mental factors are also very important

Dr Phan Chi Thanh said that COVID-19 affects the whole body, where menstrual disorders in women may be due to hormonal effects, or it may also be due to mental, physical problems. Therefore, when infected with COVID-19, several cases of mental health are affected, such as anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, stress, even depression… This is also one of the causes of menstrual problems.

“Hormones regulate a woman’s menstrual cycle, from the brain to the blood vessels and ovaries. When infected with COVID-19, some people suffer from psychological effects such as stress and depression that prevent ovulation, so late periodamenorrhea,” said Dr Thanh.

When faced with this situation, the first thing you should do, according to Dr Thanh, is to take a pregnancy test to see if you are pregnant or not. Because in the context of an epidemic, especially when families have to be isolated, having a lot of time together is often easy to “break plans”.

If you are not pregnant, if you have amenorrhea, you need to see an obstetrician and gynecologist, from whom the doctor will give specific advice to help regulate the menstrual cycle. This should be done immediately, preferably immediately after your missed period, to determine that you are not pregnant.

To have a stable menstrual cycle, Dr Thanh advises women to have a comfortable mentality and mind, to avoid stress and fatigue. Regular light exercise, proper nutrition, and especially after COVID-19, support and encouragement from loved ones are very important.
