Alpina – the tuning company that has been associated with the BMW name for more than 50 years has officially been acquired by the Bavarian brand. BMW will officially take full control of the tuning company from December 31, 2015 – when the 5-year agreement signed earlier this decade between the two parties expires.
Burkhard Bovensiepen founded Alpina in 1965 and built his reputation purely on an improved product line of BMW vehicles for faster handling. Alpina’s most successful period was in the 1970s when it made a name for itself in motorsport and by 1883 they were considered a complete “independent car manufacturer”.

Since then, BMW and Alpina have always worked closely together. While BMW’s M high-performance division focuses on improving performance, Alpina offers products that are more balanced in terms of performance and comfort and luxury, somewhat similar to BMW’s Classic philosophy.
Alpina’s most famous line of cars is the Alpina XB7 – a custom car that many have long considered the BMW X7 M by default. The official return of BMW is likely to help Alpina expand its product range to global users, and open up the possibility that BMW will have a second series of original sports cars running parallel to the series.
