Why don’t Goten and Trunks have tails like Goku and Vegeta?

Goten and Trunks in Dragon Ball are the children of two bloodlines. Their fathers, Goku and Vegeta, are pure Saiyans. And their mothers, Chichi and Bulma, were earthlings. This makes them a Saiyan-Earth hybrid. The Saiyan bloodline gives them many special powers, including invincibility and the ability to become Super Saiyan. However, the physical traits of this race were not present in them when Goten and Trunks lost their monkey tails.

Despite being half Saiyan, neither Goten nor Trunks has a monkey tail. This was a rather odd feature when Gohan still had a Saiyan tail. To explain these details, there are many theories put forward by fans.

The first theory put forward was that Goten and Trunks both had amputated tails. There are several specific reasons for this. First, it helps them integrate better with Earthlings. Apart from that, it also helps them avoid the danger of turning into a gorilla on a full moon day. The second explanation seems quite plausible, considering the Gohan and Broly cases. Either way, losing the tail is definitely the optimal choice.

Author Akira Toriyama provided some more information when asked about this, saying that the Saiyan tail is a recessive trait or gene. It is also quite reasonable if used to explain why Gohan has a tail and Goten doesn’t. However, not all fans like this biological interpretation.

Many people think that Toriyama just forgot about the Saiyan tail. He took on the role of the main storyteller in the original story, so he most likely overlooked some of the details that were prepared from the start. This possibility is very likely, especially since Toriyama once admitted that he forgot about Super Saiyan 2. Moreover, the last time Toriyama drew a Saiyan with a tail was when Gohan turned into a monkey and fought Vegeta. . After that, almost none of the characters in the story needed a tail again until Future Trunks appeared. It could be said that if Toriyama remembered this trait, he would add it to Trunks.

It is possible that the Saiyan tail is generally removed over time. Most of the surviving Saiyans had their tails ripped off. The only exceptions are Paragus and Tarble, but they don’t appear very often. When the Saiyan version of Universe 6 appeared, they even explained that the tail had disappeared. The absence of a Saiyan tail, therefore, is probably simply because the author doesn’t remember it.

However, with or without a tail, at this point, both Goten and Trunks still played their part well. The loss of the tail did not get too much of a negative reaction from the audience.
