Exercising during the day has long been thought to make it easier for you to fall asleep at night. To find this out in detail, scientists looked at 386 people who were overweight or obese, aged 35 to 70, didn’t move much, and had relatively high blood pressure.

They were divided into 4 groups: the first group did not exercise, the second group spent 3 hours a week exercising their muscles on the gym machine, the third group spent 3 hours a week exercising on a treadmill or bicycle. , all four groups did both.

The results showed that those who didn’t exercise slept the least, those who practiced running or cycling slept 23 minutes more on average, and those who worked their muscles slept 40 minutes longer. Thus, the volunteers only spent an average of 26 more minutes of exercise each day to achieve the above surprising effect.

According to the authors, the need to recover muscles after muscle training encourages the body to sleep more naturally.

“Therefore, if your sleep is deteriorating after two years of this stressful pandemic, consider incorporating two or more strength training sessions during the week,” advises Dr. Brellenthin. .

The study was presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology and Prevention Conference in Chicago.
