conservationist animal ever thought that this bat really extinctionbut in fact they still cling to the rain forest of Nyungwe (Rwanda), which is known as a very rare mountain gorilla habitat.

In 2021, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classified this bat species as critically endangered, and there is currently no information on its specific population.

BCI partnered with the Rwanda Development Board and the Wildlife Conservation Society to conduct a forest survey starting in 2013. In 2019, after a 10-day expedition exploring caves in the jungle, scientists discovered this species of bat.

“We immediately knew that the bat we found was unusual and special,” said Winifred Frick, a scientist from BCI. However, it took them another three years to verify the species.

According to Rwandan researchers, the discovery marks the beginning of a new race to save endangered animals from extinction.

“Now our job is to find ways to protect these animals in the future,” Flanders said.

Bats are nocturnal animals known as “dog monsters”, accounting for 20% of all land mammals, and are one of the IUCN endangered species.
