Discovered that ants can smell cancer in humans

The ability to distinguish cancer cells in ants

Therefore, a team of experts at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) found that Formica fusca ants have a highly developed sense of smell.

In particular, they were able to differentiate cancer cells from healthy human cells. However, the team say they need to conduct more clinical trials before the insects can be used in hospital diagnostics.

To conduct the study, the scientists exposed 36 Formica fusca ants into cells in the laboratory. First, they exposed the ants to the smell of human cancer cell samples and as a reward a small amount of sugar solution.

Ants can smell cancer

In a second step, the researchers exposed the ants to two distinct odors, an entirely new odor and a second, the smell of cancer cells.

After the experiment was successful, the researchers exposed the ants to different cancer cells. As a result, they found that the ants were able to differentiate between cancer cells and healthy cells, as well as between two different types of cancer.

After training, Formica fusca ants detected volatile organic compounds released by cancer cells.

In a recent announcement, the CNRS said that before it could be used on a large scale, it would need to re-evaluate the effectiveness of this method with clinical trials in humans. However, preliminary results suggest that ants have the ability to learn to distinguish odors very quickly, with high potential to be a low-cost, highly effective and less invasive cancer diagnostic option.

Dog sniffs cancer

This isn’t the first time scientists have used an animal’s sense of smell to find cancer cells.

Since 2015, Medical Definitions Dogs, a charity in collaboration with the UK Department of Health and universities, has been conducting more experiments using dogs to “sniff” cancer.

Previously, in the first experiment, dogs were trained to sniff out prostate cancer in men through their urine. The signal is very positive when the dog has identified the disease with 93% accuracy. Compared to previous prostate cancer tests such as the PSA, this test is more accurate.

Dogs are animals that are recognized by many scientists around the world for their ability to smell cancer

The pilot project involved 9 dogs who were trained for 6 months to detect the smell of cancer. They will be sniffed by more than 3,000 patients to check for prostate cancer, as well as kidney and bladder tumors. When cancer is detected, they are taught to sit up straight and give warning signs. Each time a tumor is detected, they will be rewarded with a cake.

Dr. Claire Guest, an expert on animal behavior, has also shown that animals have the ability to sense cancer cells by sniffing their skin, smelling breath or smelling urine.

His first study, published five years ago, claims to be able to train dogs to detect cancer samples from patients. This will increase the dog’s ability to detect disease accurately by up to 73%.

In 2010, Japanese scientists demonstrated that dogs can detect cancer from a patient’s breath sample. In 2012, the European Respiratory Journal also published a study showing that dogs can detect lung cancer by breathing.
