The first thing entrepreneurs do before becoming a billionaire

Many of today’s self-employed millionaires and billionaires worked in sales when they were younger.

According to research conducted by sociologist and historian Rainer Zitelmann, many of today’s billionaires and self-employed millionaires worked in sales when they were younger. This is a job they consider essential to their current success.

Zitelmann interviews 45 billionaires with net worths starting at 11 million USD up to more than 3 billion USD. Their property can be entirely self-made or built on inheritance from the family.

“Until now, researchers have underestimated or completely ignored the important role of sales skills for the super-rich,” says Zetwmann, “According to the people in our study, they considered sales skills to be the most important factor in their success.”

They used to sell everything from jewelry and cosmetics to used car radios and wheel rims, to even used egg cartons that could be used as silencers.

Many celebrities and wealthy CEOs claim to have worked in sales before becoming rich. Famous rapper Kanye West used to be a salesman at fashion house Gap, or famous actors like Johnny Depp and Jennifer Aniston were both telemarketers.

Notably, the CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings, is a former salesman of vacuum cleaners. This, he says, “sounds weird, but I like it. You get to meet a lot of different people.”

Another independent study by the hiring social network LinkedIn found that sales director is one of the top five most popular first jobs for CEOs today. “Sales skills are invaluable. Every company depends on it,” said Cheryl Palmer, founder of career consulting firm Call to Career.

Many experts economy states, even if you don’t plan to run a company, sales experience is essential. “People need a basic understanding of their strengths and how to ‘sell’ them,” says Randalyn Hill, relationship development expert at career coaching firm Ama La Vida.

“Throughout your life and career, you need to support yourself and sell your values. This will help you get more clients, negotiate the salary you want, and get a stable promotion,” says the expert.

So how do you get the sales experience at zero? Palmer recommends applying for “commissioned” positions as these jobs will require hard work if you want your income and skills to be significantly improved. Alternatively, you can also sign up for an online course in sales skills.

And don’t worry if you’re not good at it, says expert Randalyn Hill. Most sales are uncomfortable at first, but the more you do it, the more likely you are to make a lot of money.
