Behind the woman who has not been able to stand for 50 years

Sidewalk restaurant but crowded. Two rows of tables were packed with people eating. Everything around doesn’t seem to be paying much attention… She staggers away with one arm and one leg.

50 years never got up

The shop is still crowded. The seller is busy with his work. Customers eat in a hurry to finish their meal in time to get to the office. Only she – one hand on the ground, moved little by little, one hand held a bunch of lottery tickets to each table to invite each person to buy them to help her.

I kept dragging like that for a long time, but there were still lots of lottery tickets. Come to my side, she invites me, uncle buys for me. I turned to look at her. An elderly woman. She is neatly dressed.

She was still sitting on the ground. Her left leg twitched. So is the left hand. Only one hand holds a bunch of lottery tickets for a living. Her name is Dinh Thi Kim Thao, she just turned 50 years old this year. Her hometown is in Hoa Tri commune, Phu Hoa district (Phu Yen).

She said that her childhood was very difficult. Born as normal as any other child, but only 2 months later – after a fever – the left half of her body was almost completely paralyzed. And then grow up. She couldn’t work, so she had help with everything.

The family has 4 siblings, she is the middle child, has a disability. She grew up in the upbringing of her parents. After a while, her father passed away. Her mother struggled alone with the fields to raise her sister.

Fifty years of being a human, she has literally never stood up. The image of a mother wandering around in the sun and rain made her spend many nights thinking… I can’t let her suffer forever about me.

Lottery ticket sellers have been living in this house for 8 years straight.

Then she left with friends in the same situation to Ho Chi Minh City to find a way to make a living. Lottery career came to her from there.

“It’s been 8 years since I escaped, uncle”. She told me. Life so far has been fine. Every day she goes to sell from afternoon to evening and the next day from morning to noon, she can earn several hundred thousand. The money for housing and food also goes through the day without having to ask anyone. In addition, she also saves a little bit of money from time to time to send to her mother.

I inquired about her love life and whereabouts. She said, “Who would care about a child like this. Currently, I am living with about 15 people from the same hometown of Phu Yen to sell lottery tickets on the 1st floor of An Quang apartment building”.

Thao dragged her step by step.

Level 1 how can I go up and down? She smiled lightly, “Okay, uncle. I drag myself up and down a few times a day. If I go far, I ask for a motorbike taxi. I invite you to visit the Phu Yen lottery house someday. You will meet many people, many pitiful lives.”

Selling lottery tickets while treating my grandchild

We visited the lottery house one afternoon. House No. 115, 1st floor, Lot E, An Quang apartment building (P.9, District 10, HCMC). Large house. Looking inside, there were many people lying on either side of the wall.

Please buy lottery tickets.

One person who picked us up said there were about 15 people in the house. Some of these people have disabilities, some people don’t. They live mostly in the countryside, have very difficult circumstances, so they come here to live and make a living by selling lottery tickets for 8 years.

In recent years, the outbreak of the epidemic has made the lives of the already harsh people even more difficult. Some people have to leave their hometown to live for the day, but then when the lottery ticket is back, they return to their old job.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Sau, 70 years old, in Hoa Xuan commune, Dong Hoa district, said that she has 8 years of experience in selling lottery tickets. Her husband died at a young age. She stayed there to raise 3 children. The children are now grown up with families, but they do not have enough to eat, so she has to go to Ho Chi Minh City to live by selling lottery tickets. She said, although none of my children agree to let me do it, I still have to earn some money, tomorrow when I lie down I still have money for them to take care of me.

Check the sold number…

Every day, she leaves the house from 5 pm to 11 pm. At 4 am the next day, continue until noon. Diving all the way from District 5 to District 10, she sold more than 100 sheets every day. Her daily income is only enough for her to get through the day, but she also shared with us: “Less is better than nothing. Even in the countryside, no matter how hard I work, I can’t earn such income.”

There is nothing more painful than seeing her – her age is advanced, her back is already hunched – and yet she is still working to make a living on her own without worrying about her children and grandchildren.

Inside, an elderly man was carrying a boy out. We invite you to sit down.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Sau.

He is Ha Van Ra, 63 years old, living in Hoa Thang commune, H. Phu Hoa. The child accompanying him is 15-year-old Ha Son Phat, his grandson. Every day, the two of them go around the streets together to sell lottery tickets. Looking at Phat white, fat, handsome – few people think that he is blind and has to go all the way with his grandmother.

Mr. Ra said that the conditions and circumstances that pushed him into selling lottery tickets were like no other. 15 years ago his daughter got married and gave birth to Phat. Normal child rearing until the age of 7 Phat suddenly fell ill with Japanese polio encephalitis. I was blind and had to lie down.

I just fell ill, my father left again. Grandfather was forced to replace his mother instead of his father to take care of his grandchildren. After many days of treatment in his hometown, he took him to Ho Chi Minh City for further treatment.

However, Mr. Ra said that no medicine can treat him as effectively as selling lottery tickets. “Thanks to selling lottery tickets, I led him to walk and exercise, but the effect was noticeable. He didn’t need to use a wheelchair like before.

Income from lottery tickets also changes day by day. The pieces of cake, the delicious food I give to him so that he can overcome. And thanks to that, I have quite good health. However, your eyes are incurable.” His voice grew sadder and sadder.

Mr. Nguyen Qui An, leader of Group 65, Quarter 4, said that after many years of living in house 115, lot E, lottery ticket sellers have lived very honestly and with dignity. They work hard with their own labor. They never complained, never asked for help. People selling lottery tickets have a comfortable life – at least mentally – without disturbing anyone and not letting anything happen.
