When babies are 6 months old, they start eating solid foods and only eat once a day. Do not replace breast milk completely during this period. 1. Feed your baby from a little to a lot

Mothers practice feeding the baby little by little from the first 1-3 meals, you can give your baby 5-10ml of liquid food. Increase the amount of food gradually with each meal. Newborns eat 1 time/day, if they are used to it, they can eat 2 times/day and eat additional snacks in the form of fruit, yogurt, whey…

2. Feed your baby from liquid to solid

Newborns eat solid food, then feed them 2-3 meals of light powder, then gradually increase the consistency from flour to porridge, then to crushed rice… Side dishes like vegetables need to be softened.

3. Food weaning increases over time

Babies aged 6-8 months can already eat porridge and vegetables. From 9 to 11 months, it is necessary to eat enough food groups such as flour, meat, eggs, fish, shrimp, crab, vegetables and cooking oil, fruits. Baby food should be clean and well cooked.

4. Meal time

Babies eat 2 hours after waking up. Babies eat at certain times. You can refer to the following timeframes:

– Baby eats solid food 1 time/day: Feed your baby 8-9am.

– Baby eats solid food 2 times/day: Feed your baby at 8-9am and 17-18pm

– Baby eats 3 times/day: Feed your baby at 8-9am, 13-14pm and 17-18pm.

The mother should give the baby solid food at the same time during the breastfeeding process. Give your baby the last solid food before 7pm.

1. How to feed a 6 month old baby for the first time

This is the weaning phase of your baby. You can feed your baby solid foods in the following ways:

2. How to feed a 7-8 month baby

From 7 months onwards, babies enter the official weaning stage.

– Type of food:

Pureed fruit (bananas, pears, apples, avocados, peaches…)

+ Fruit juice

+ Pureed vegetables (carrot, sweet potato, pumpkin…)

+ Puree meat (pork, chicken, beef…)

+ Mashed beans (black beans, lentils, peas …)

Grains (wheat, barley, etc.)

– Amount of food: 2 – 3 spoonfuls of fruit pulp, gradually increased to 4 spoons/time. Vegetables increased from 2-3 scoops to 4 scoops/time. 3 tablespoons cereal / 1 serving. Babies can eat 2 times / day. Breast milk or formula still accounts for 50% of nutrition.

– Note: At this stage, mothers can practice giving Japanese-style weaning or self-directed weaning to their children. The mother boils or steams the food, then lets the baby learn to handle it on his own.

– The ratio of cooking porridge or powder for babies at this stage is 1:8 (1 rice, 8 water)

3. How to give solid food to babies aged 9 – 10 months?

At this stage, the baby can hold, pick and eat, and can chew. Nowadays baby food is very diverse.

– Type of food:

+ Mashed vegetables (carrots, pumpkin, potatoes… cooked)

+ Crushed fruit (apple, pear, peach, avocado, banana …)

Protein-rich foods are pork, poultry, fish, tofu, lentils, etc.

+ All kinds of cereals

+ Cheese, yogurt without sugar.

– Amount of food:

+ 1/4 – 1/3 cup milk

+ 1/4 – 1/2 cup iron-fortified cereal

+ 3/4 – 1 cup fruit

+ 3/4 – 1 cup vegetables

+ 3 – 4 tablespoons of protein rich food

– Note: Babies can start solid food 3 times/day. Mothers can cook vegetables, meat and cut them into small pieces for the baby to eat in a Japanese-style weaning or it can also be cooked into porridge so that the baby eats traditionally weaned.

– The ratio of cooking porridge at this stage is 1: 7

4. How to feed a baby from 10 to 12 months old

At this stage, babies eat solid food as before, they also hold and chew better. The mother can cook food for her baby to feed herself. Or mothers can cook porridge for babies to be weaned traditionally.

– Type of food: Cereal, fruit, vegetable puree. Babies can eat more pasta, casseroles, cheese, yogurt. Babies can eat 3 times / day and with 2-3 snacks.

– Amount of food:

+ 1/3 cup milk

+ 1/4 -1/2 cup iron-fortified cereal

+ 3/4 – 1 cup fruit

+ 3/4 – 1 cup vegetables

+ 1/8 – 1/4 cup combination food

+ 3 – 4 tablespoons of protein rich food

– The ratio of cooking porridge at this stage is 1:7.

A few notes when feeding the baby properly

– Children under 1 year are not given seasonings such as salt, sugar, powdered spices, chili, fish sauce, honey. Babies can eat more cooking oil, onions and garlic… from the 10th month onwards.

– Vary baby weaning food, create colorful food to stimulate child’s appetite.

– Be patient when the child wants to eat, the time to eat 1 meal only lasts up to 1 hour. Do not force children to eat.

– Babies can eat from flour to porridge to crushed rice. From the 7th month, mothers can practice Japanese style weaning by holding, biting and feeding themselves. Food must retain its original taste by boiling or steaming.

– Do not feed babies under 6 months. Weaning too early will affect the baby’s digestive system, babies are easily malnourished.
