The laundry has a fairly simple but very organized area, making for a very open space. When I walked into the laundromat, even though I had known beforehand that the people who worked there were Deaf, I was still struggling for a while when I didn’t know how to start. After struggling for a while it seemed the owner saw me and gave me a pen and paper, from here we started communicating in a more “special” way.

The shop is full of people going in and out to get things, most of the people here are regulars. When the customer delivers the item, the staff carefully inspects the item, asking if the customer has any other needs with the symbol on the table. So one person writes, the other uses signs to signal. Perhaps, it will take a little longer but experience a very interesting form of communication.

If they’re regulars, there’s no need for writers, but they’ve learned some basic signs themselves to be able to get their ideas across.

Uncle Nam (Hoang Mai, Hanoi) says: “I myself am a regular customer of this shop, I bring everything here to be washed. In general the service here is very good, friends are very enthusiastic. At first I was quite surprised when I could not communicate. How about you guys, but then once or twice you get used to it.

As for people with disabilities themselves, they have tried very hard to integrate into society, so why don’t we support and use them to become more confident. Not to mention the laundry is still very good, the price is not too expensive.”.

WHERE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THROUGH SIGNS – RESPONSIBILITY FIRST

When receiving customer goods, officers will exchange and record what needs to be considered with each customer’s goods. If you didn’t know from afar or didn’t know that this laundry belonged to the Deaf, you would definitely think that the two people in it were arguing or arguing about something. Because their language of communication is a sign.

Perhaps, if you experience this pattern like me, you will feel that life will go a little slower, we will understand each other better through our eyes or gestures. Witnessing how the staff here work, you will clearly see their enthusiasm for work.

Thuy recounted:I am very lucky to be able to accompany the deaf who are responsible for their work and also because this profession has to open shops often.”

DON’T FOLLOW THIS LAUGHTER OF DEAD PEOPLE – PERSONALITY AND YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL

Ms Thuy – Owner of a deaf laundromat.

Sharing about the store opening process so far, Ms. Thuy said that he was most impressed with the first time: “At that time, I put all my energy and time into being able to open my first laundromat, I was quite persistent, so no matter how hard it was, I didn’t back down, as a result, I opened my first shop with a joint venture drawing. It wasn’t until I got to the second laundry that I really used my finances and some friends with disabilities to open it.”

He was also always busy with shop work.

Thuy told more about his work, he said: “Right now, I’m 100% focused on the laundromat but still working on different projects in the community so I can connect more. Like Career counseling and job placement for people with disabilities is my project. It’s not a paid job but I want to learn to do it because if there are a lot of people who apply for a job at the laundromat but it’s not a good fit, I can guide them to another suitable job. And our employees are also oriented towards long-term work and better life stability.”

For Ms. Thuy, the most important thing to be able to do a community project is to understand the community, know how to communicate and convey the language. Like the Deaf community, project developers must also know sign language and meet more Deaf people to gain trust. Most importantly, don’t have personal prejudices about the community you work in.
