New sublineage of the Omicron . variant detected

According to experts, the high number of new infections makes mutations more likely. The Omicron variant mutated into sublines BA.1, BA.2 and BA.3. However, the number of infections and deaths in Hong Kong rose to an all-time high to coincide with the emergence of Omicron’s BA.2.2 subline.

Currently, Hong Kong records about 5,000 new infections and 30 deaths every week. Mortality is higher in those infected with sublineage BA.2.2, so the situation should be closely monitored. Most of the deaths in Hong Kong are elderly and unvaccinated.
