This stunning image captured by the Hubble Space Telescope looks like a crazy laser cutting through the sky. The results show that it is actually a powerful supersonic gas.

According to Space, the strange laser-like structure is a powerful jet stream emanating from the Herbig-Haro object, a bright, mist-like patch of gas that surrounds a newborn star.

The ESA says the strange laser region, called HH34, is about 1,250 light-years from Earth and lies in the famous Orion Nebula, where Hubble has been aiming its lens for decades.

Orion is renowned for containing a fertile stellar nursery as well as the closest stellar nursery to Earth.

The strange laser is not a laser in nature, but a powerful stream of energy emitted by a newborn star, which has not yet fully formed. The energy beam penetrated the gas cloud at supersonic speed, heating the gas along the way, creating a bright glow. This cosmic laser will be short-lived.

According to Science Alert, researchers from ESA say this is one of the most spectacular phenomena ever observed in the Milky Way (the galaxy that contains Earth). Studying them will provide lots of interesting details about how young stars go through their protostellar phases, gradually forming during the “sparkling” births.
