The best-selling car in Southeast Asia has no sales in Vietnam

According to statistics from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), sales of the Toyota Hilux pickup model in the Vietnam market in February were 0 units, topping the list of the slowest selling cars in the market. A month earlier, sales of this model only reached 9 cars.

During the previous 3 months, the Toyota Hilux had sales rated “positive”, reaching 712 vehicles in October 2021, 607 vehicles in November, and 295 vehicles in December. If accumulated throughout 2021, Toyota Hilux sales will reach 4,413 units. Over 4,000 vehicles per year is a fairly modest number with a market of 400,000 vehicles per year, only accounting for about 1% of the market share.

With a dismal start to 2022 with only 9 cars sold in 2 months, many believe that Hilux sales could be even worse this year.

This caused a paradox in the Vietnamese market when the Toyota Hilux itself just won the sales king award in the Southeast Asian market in 2021. Specifically, according to statistics, the Toyota Hilux achieved sales of 176,062 vehicles in the commercial area. including the markets of Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. With these sales, Hilux accounts for 6.2% of the car market share across the region.

Not only the Hilux, the second best-selling car model in Southeast Asia with 163,137 units sold is the Isuzu D-Max which also recorded “low” sales in Vietnam. The Isuzu D-Max achieved sales of 77 vehicles in February, before it had 138 vehicles in January. This reflects the fact that the “boldness” of buying a car of Vietnamese users has a certain difference compared to that of Vietnamese users. some other major markets in the region such as Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia or the Philippines.

With the Toyota Hilux, zero sales is the worst result of this model since the launch of the new generation in Vietnam. According to experts, the lack of component supply is the main reason Toyota Thailand is not producing enough vehicles to supply markets, including Vietnam.

Sales of the Toyota Hilux have been gradually declining in recent months.

However, the fact is, even in this period of uninterrupted supply, the Hilux is not the first choice in the pickup segment, let alone compared to many other “national” models.

In Vietnam, the new Ford Ranger is the best-selling pickup truck. In 2021, this model achieved sales of 15,650 vehicles, far exceeding the remaining models and among the best-selling cars on the market. Last February, the Ranger was beaten in sales by the Mitsubishi Triton, but the main reason was that the car was in short supply due to a lack of components. In addition, the announcement of the Ford Ranger 2022 also makes users psychologically wait for the new version.

Of course, among the best-selling cars in Southeast Asia, there are still popular names in Vietnam such as Toyota Vios, Mitsubishi Xpander or Ford Ranger. However, there is a stark difference that the Korean model does not make the list of the most popular cars in Southeast Asia at all. However, Korean cars are the inevitable choice of many Vietnamese consumers. In the list of 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam in February, there are 6 models from Korea, namely Kia Seltos, K3, Carnival; Hyundai Accent, Grand i10 and Santa Fe.

Similar to the list of 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam in 2021, there are also 5 names from Korean brands.
