Twitter launches version of social network on Tor-Information Technology

Twitter has launched a version of its social network on the Internet browser Tor – a step that could help users avoid being tracked and monitored on the Internet.

Websites on the Tor browser use the domain name “.onion” instead of the domain name “.com”. The Tor browser also hides the location and activity of users’ access, although not to an absolute extent.

Tor is often referred to along with the dark web – an “underground” part of Internet requires certain access methods or specialized software – but now a number of legitimate organizations and businesses already have websites using the .onion domain name.

A Twitter representative said: “Making the service more accessible is currently our priority… It’s been a long time coming.”

After Russia’s military attack on Ukraine, Twitter was restricted in Russia, while Facebook was completely blocked. Both social networks expressed their desire to find a way to continue operating in Russia so that Russians can maintain contact with outsiders and access sources outside of Russia.
