Previously, in March 2021, SIPRI released a report that the number of weapons traded worldwide had leveled off after more than 10 years of continuous increase.

SIPRI’s report shows that, compared with the 2011-2015 period, in the 2016-2020 period, the world’s three largest arms exporters, the US, France and Germany, all increased their export output. However, Russia and China reduced their exports during the same period, so overall, global arms sales have leveled off after more than a decade of steady growth.

While exports remain at their highest level since the end of the Cold War, this is the first time since 2001-2005 that arms transfers between countries have not increased as a whole since 2001. previous five-year period.

The main reason is that the Covid-19 pandemic has pushed many economies into a severe recession and had to cut defense procurement to shift focus to the health sector.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute was founded in 1966 and is an independent consulting organization engaged in research on conflict, weapons, arms control and disarmament. SIPRI’s database covers the entire period from 1950, and its experts typically use data over a five-year period to describe trends in international military transfers.

According to SIPRI, in 2020, arms companies sold $531 billion worth of military equipment, 1.3% more than in 2019.

Compared to 2015, the revenue increase of arms companies in the world is 17%. Experts note that while the economies of many countries have contracted due to the pandemic, sales of weapons companies have increased for the sixth consecutive year.

The list of arms companies includes 41 companies from the US, which account for more than half of the world’s arms sales. Last year, US arms companies sold $285 billion worth of military equipment, nearly 2% more than a year earlier.

The US defense industry group Lockheed-Martin, topped with sales of $58.2 billion thanks to best-selling products such as the F-35 fighter jet and a variety of missiles.

Meanwhile, the British BAE Systems arms group won first place in the European market, right above three Chinese corporations.

According to SIPRI, China ranks second in global arms sales with 13%, followed by the UK at 7.1%.
