12-year-old baby coughs up blood, almost dies from complications after Covid-19

On March 10, Hanoi Heart Hospital received a patient with NP (SN 2010, in Dong Anh, Hanoi), who came to the emergency room in a state of unable to speak, having difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, with an SpO2 index of 80%.

Before that, NP was healthy. Although on admission, the patient had a negative rapid test result for SARS-CoV-2, but doctors considered this to be a suspected case. Covid-19 severe course (then PCR is positive).

Pediatric emergency at the hospital

Emergency department doctors quickly gave first aid and transferred to the Pediatric Resuscitation Department to conduct intubation. The patient’s condition deteriorated, the mechanical ventilation index was high, hemodynamic instability was necessary, so two vasopressors had to be maintained.

The next day, the patient had ventricular tachycardia and circulatory arrest, forcing the doctors to conduct emergency electric shock, but heart function decreased much, despite taking antiarrhythmic drugs, but no response.

Doctors evaluated this as a case of severe Covid-19 infection, the pediatric patient had acute myocarditis, and was ordered to place ECMO. During the placement of the ECMO machine, the patient still had to receive an electric shock and emergency circulatory arrest. After 2 days, the child’s condition improved and was weaned from ECOM. By day 3, the patient was extubated and was able to breathe on his own, hemodynamically stable.

Ths.BS Le Trong Tu, Department of Pediatric Resuscitation, said that right after receiving the patient, we diagnosed her with myocarditis, possibly caused by Covid-19 despite rapid testing. 2 times.

Ths.BS Tu also recommended that although children with Covid-19 have not been seriously ill, parents cannot be subjective because the symptoms of the disease in children are quite diverse, not only respiratory symptoms but also other organs. other organs such as heart, brain… need to be detected and taken to hospital soon. Children from 5-11 years old if vaccinated Covid-19 vaccine reduce the risk of getting sick and getting worse.
