Chinese users are looking to buy a MacBook Pro without a screen to use as a Mac mini
Not long ago, Apple revealed a license of invention shows that the company has the idea of turning the Magic Keyboard into a portable Mac with pre-installed macOS operating system, from which it can be used with any screen. This is not a completely new idea because the Raspberry Pi 400 with a computer design in a keyboard already exists.
However, some Chinese retailers are selling these “products” as a hot commodity.
Leaker DuanRui recently shared on Twitter that Chinese users are tending to look for a MacBook Pro without a screen to use as a Mac mini. These special MacBook Pros have absolutely no screen, leaving only the body including the keyboard, speakers, Touch Bar (depending on the version), and all the components underneath.
If a MacBook has a broken screen, the price to replace is very high and many people choose to sell the whole machine. Then some stores can disassemble the screen and body.
They’ve been slightly tweaked by the store and sold for less than used MacBooks, making them attractive to budget-conscious customers who want to use Apple products.
According to Notebookcheck, this is a win-win investment when users get the power of a cheap MacBook Pro. The seller can repair and sell the screen separately if it can still be “saved”, and most importantly, avoid a computer being thrown in the landfill.
This “product” is even better than the Mac mini in some cases, because it has a keyboard and trackpad available, and has better speakers. The lack of a webcam can be solved with an external accessory. The MacBooks have no problem running without the screen.
On Chinese sites like Taobao, an early 2015 MacBook without a screen starts at 799 yuan ($127). Some newer and better-spec versions cost around $400.
