Taiwan’s Air Self-Defense Force sent fighter jets to respond and “warn” the group of mainland Chinese aircraft to leave the area. The island’s anti-aircraft missile systems were also activated to “monitor the activities” of Chinese aircraft.
Beijing has not yet commented on the report.
The incident occurred at the same time that Taiwan decided to suspend the departure of Mirage 2000 fighter jets, after a Taiwanese aircraft of this type crashed during training. However, other fighters of the island defense force, such as the F-16 fighter, are still allowed to operate.
In recent years, mainland China tends to increase the frequency of sending military aircraft close to Taiwan. Earlier this year, Beijing even deployed 39 aircraft close to Taiwan in a day, considered to be the largest-scale close by aircraft ever.
