‘Rich kid’ once tricked New York into being deported back to the country

Recently, some sources close to Insider have revealed that Anna Sorokin – the real-life prototype of the hit Netflix movie “Inventing Anna”, is being deported from the US.

As expected, Anna will be transferred from the prison in upstate New York at 2 pm on March 14 and then boarded a plane back to Germany. During that time, the prison handed over and disposed of Anna’s trust fund and disabled the accounts she used to make video calls.

On February 17, the Immigration Appeals Board of the US Department of Justice decided to deny Anna’s appeal to stay in the US, allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport her.

“As there are no longer requests for processing, the applicant’s period of stay, which was granted on November 30, 2021, has expired. Requests for an extension will be denied,” one document read. Even so, Anna still has 30 days to file another appeal to delay her return to Germany.

The lawyer representing Anna said her client still has one month to appeal and that enforcing the eviction decision now is “legally inappropriate”. This person added that authorities could not deport Anna until at least March 17.

For their part, representatives from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement declined to comment on Anna’s deportation status. Meanwhile, German newspaper Der Spiegel reports that Anna will be deported this week.

Anna completed her prison sentence for petty theft and fraud last February. Two months later, she was re-arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement for overstaying her visa.

Anna penetrated the American elite since 2016 under the name Anna Delvey. The German “heiress” often “tips” $100 bills to waiters and is a guest of many luxurious parties in New York.

The trick she often uses to trick them is to “go to the wharf”, stay at a 5-star hotel, but when paying, the card suddenly malfunctions. She then promised to return the money to the “victim” but of course forgot to do so.

By October 2017, Anna’s days of stealing money and fraud came to an end. She was arrested on 8 counts, including fraud, appropriation of services and theft.

At that time, she owed the bank 100,000 USD, owed her high-class friends several tens of thousands of dollars each. In total, Anna owes $275,000. She was sentenced to 12 years in prison and ordered to pay $199,000.

In 2021, thanks to good rehabilitation, Anna was released from prison early. After that, she remained in New York because she received an invitation to cooperate with Netflix and HBO. The remuneration that Anna received was 290,000 USD (equivalent to 6.5 billion VND). However, for the time being, she has not received any money because she still has to pay the debt to the victims before receiving the rest.

In addition to Netflix and HBO, there are many other newspapers and magazines that want to invite Anna to interview and appear on the cover. So maybe it won’t be difficult for this scammer to make money with her story.

Talking about her experience in prison, Anna shared: “Actually, this place is not bad at all. People usually think it’s horrible, but I see it as a sociological experiment.”
