7.3 magnitude earthquake, Japan tsunami warning, Prime Minister Kishida urges people to “prioritize lives”

The Jerusalem Post reported: A strong earthquake struck at a depth of 60km off the northeast coast of Japan, causing houses to shake. This is also the area that has been hit by an earthquake and tsunami that caused a major nuclear disaster 11 years ago.

Occurring at 23:36 (local time) on March 16, 2022, the earthquake measured magnitude 7.3 – equivalent to 6+ on Japan’s shaking intensity scale in some areas – means so strong that humans cannot stand, according to NHK. After that, the aftershock continued.

According to Fox5DC, in Tokyo also felt the tremor, more than 2 million households in the capital lost power.

Japan has issued a tsunami warning of up to 1m high for Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. Japanese officials urged people in these areas to stay away from the coast or estuaries.

According to the latest information posted by NHK, at Ishinomaki port in Miyagi Prefecture, a tsunami 20cm high was recorded at 0:29 on March 17 (local time). Tsunamis are expected to be as high as 1m.

Japanese experts warn that tsunamis can hit many times and rise suddenly. Japanese people are advised to stay away from high-risk areas.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida asked people to protect their lives in a post on Twitter: “Please take action to save your lives first. Stay tuned for information from television and radio. and disaster prevention information on the internet”.

Sharing with the press, Mr. Kishida said that the Japanese government was assessing the extent of the damage and pledged to make every effort for rescue and relief work.

The Japan Self-Defense Forces sent fighter jets from the Hyakuri base in Ibaraki, south of Fukushima, to the scene to collect information and assess the damage.

Meanwhile, East Japan Railway (JR East) said that most of its rail service has been suspended for safety checks. NHK said that the news agency is currently verifying information that the Tohoku shinkansen train derailed while traveling between Fukushima Station and Shiroishizao Station.

According to JR East’s Shinkansen operations headquarters, it was reported that some vehicles were stopped in an inclined state.
