Sacred tree, ancient temple

The sky stood still, lottery ticket sellers walked to find the shade of the great brooch located in the temple of the same name in Duc Hoa Ha commune (Duc Hoa district, Long An province) for lunch.

Here, they tell spiritual stories about this hundred-year-old tree.

Located in the middle of the field, the ancient brooch is very large, divided into many sub-roots. The tree trunks form a giant mass 10 people can not hug. The roots of the brooch rise up to the blue sky, dividing many branches into each other, the branches and leaves are luxuriant, shading a large area of land.

No local people know when the brooch is from. When asked, they only said, since he was a “boy with 3 ponytails of hair, tending buffaloes and cows, he saw the brooch standing in the middle of the field”.

The ancient brooch stands tall and stands out in the middle of the field.

Moreover, they are all told by the ancients that the brooch existed before the time of their “great-grandfather and great-grandfather” and was very sacred. Mr. Nguyen Van Ru (70 years old, Duc Hoa Ha commune) said: “The brooch and the temple have existed for a long time.”

“The tree and shrine are located on my land, which my family has managed and cared for since ancient times until now. The ancients said, the brooch is very sacred, no one dares to desecrate it, no one dares to cut it down. Anyone who commits a crime will have bad luck,” added Ru.

Elders in the region assert that, when this area was still a dense forest, the brooch tree stood tall, despite all efforts to destroy it to reclaim the land of indigenous people and people from all over the world. During the war, the area with the brooch was also within range of enemy artillery.

However, after two resistance wars, through many bombs and bullets, the brooch and the small temple still stood tall, without suffering a single loss.

Mr. Ru added: “Every year when the fruit is ripe, the brooch is luxuriant and purple on the branches. However, since ancient times, no one has dared to climb up to pick the fruit to eat or sell. Everyone who climbs falls falls, if it’s light, they’ll break their arms and legs, and if they’re heavy, they’ll die.

Ever since I was a child, I have witnessed people who dare to disobey, climb trees to pick fruit, fall down. Since then, everyone in the area knows the story, so they only dare to pick up fallen fruit to eat, but they absolutely do not dare to climb up to pick it.”

The main body of the brooch has been broken and decayed for a long time.

Mr. Ru also confirmed that the ancients were afraid and respected the ancient brooch. They told each other that if there is nothing necessary, do not go near the tree. When passing by, you must take off your hat and bow to the ancient tree.

Suddenly became a place to pray, ask for a number

One of the other stories that add to the mystery of the great brooch is the hopelessness of the French in trying to cut down the tree. Ru’s wife said that in the past, the French intended to cut down the sacred tree.

However, they could not hire anyone in the area because no one dared to desecrate the ancient brooch. Angered, the French soldiers directly used saws to cut down. However, while sawing trees, the saw blades suddenly broke, broken for unknown reasons.

However, the seedlings surrounding the main trunk have now grown tall, shading an area.

Powerless against cutting down precious trees and facing fierce opposition from locals, the French gave up their intention of destroying the brooch and the small shrine.

“I have heard this story since I was a child. It was my father who asked the French not to cut down precious trees. Only then did they withdraw their troops,” said Ru.

Currently, Cay Tram temple is repaired and embellished more spaciously by the people. Every year, on the 18th day of the 2nd lunar month, Mr. Ru’s family still holds worship services at the temple. This activity attracts a lot of local people to participate.

However, in recent years, the campus of the small temple under the great brooch has suddenly become a place for Ouija, asking for numbers of red-and-black believers. Many people believe that the temple is very sacred and has “blessed” many cases of winning the lottery.

Mr. Ru did not know when the brooch and the small temple were. Since he was a child, he has seen and heard thrilling stories about this ancient tree.

Mr. Ru affirmed: “It is true that people buy lottery tickets at Cay Tram temple and win the jackpot. That time, some people bought and won 10 jackpot tickets. However, after winning the lottery, I no longer heard their whereabouts.”

This story is also exchanged and told by people who often go to Cay Tram temple to avoid the sun. Believing that the shrine is sacred, many red-and-black believers come here to buy lottery tickets, ask for numbers… in the hope of changing their lives.

“Now this situation has eased because of the epidemic. However, from time to time, people still come here to ask for the number of questions. They often come at night, so we can’t manage them all,” said Mr. Ru.

Every day, the small temple has many people coming to smoke incense and rest under the shade of the ancient brooch. Among these are people who sell lottery tickets and play lottery games.

Mr. Le Van Du, Secretary and Head of Binh Ta 1 hamlet, Duc Hoa Ha commune, Duc Hoa district said that the ancient brooch tree and the shrine of the same name are located on the land of a family in the hamlet.

“There is no such thing as a brooch and a shrine so sacred that it blesses people with winning lottery tickets and lottery numbers. These are stories created by a few people themselves to sell lottery tickets, play lottery games. Every time these subjects gather, we find a way to disperse them,” said Mr. Du.
