Alarm about the link between COVID-19 and diabetes

There are currently two possibilities diabetes could be the result of having COVID-19 or the disease is the result of stagnation, inactivity during the pandemic.

Uncles doctor There is concern that COVID-19 and a stagnant lifestyle during the pandemic may be the main causes of diabetes cases.

Dr. Rasa Kazlauskaite, diabetes specialist, Medical Center, Rush University, USA, said: “Just because a person has diabetes during COVID-19 does not mean that person will definitely have diabetes forever. But we also know that the SARS-CoV-2 virus permanently damages the beta cells of the pancreas, reducing the body’s ability to make and secrete insulin. And so getting diabetes as a result of COVID-19 can be permanent“.

There are currently more than 540 million people with diabetes worldwide, including patients like Nolan Balcitis, a young adult who has had to get used to checking blood sugar and taking insulin daily.
