President Putin speaks on the 8th anniversary of Russia’s annexation of Crimea, revealing the purpose of the operation in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave a speech to thousands of people at the Luzhniki Stadium on the 8th anniversary of Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

Recalling the referendum on March 18, 2014, Mr. Putin said that maybe people voted with the thought of a common destiny, with the desire to keep a common destiny with Russia.

The Russian leader said: “Russia has made great efforts to support Crimea and Sevastopol”, including basic things such as gas and energy supply, community services, restoration. road network, construction of new road and bridge systems.

In his speech, President Putin also mentioned Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine and mentioned the situation in Donbass.

“The people of Donbass live in a state of siege, subjected to a lot of bombs and shells,” Putin said. “The purpose of the operation is to save the people from this situation.”

Putin stressed that the way the Russians fight and act in the military campaign – side by side – shows the solidarity of the Russian people: “They help, support each other and, if necessary, they ready to use our bodies to protect each other from the bullets on the battlefield. We have not been united like that for a long time.”

Referring to this spirit of solidarity, Putin quoted a verse from the Bible: “Greater love has no one than the love of a man who lays down his life for his friends.”

The speech was given by Putin at a time when the two leaders of the United States and China held a phone conversation about Ukraine. On February 24, Moscow launched a military operation in Ukraine and faced strong opposition from the US, the West and many countries around the world. This activity brought Russia to an unprecedented level of sanctions.
