According to information from Bai Chay Hospital (Quang Ninh), recently, the hospital’s eye clinic continues to receive many patients with red eyes due to post-traumatic stress disorder. COVID-19. Statistics from eye clinics show that up to 40% of the total number of patients who come for treatment for eye diseases have post-COVID-19 conjunctivitis.

Master, Doctor Bui Thi Phuong Nhung – Department of Ophthalmology, Bai Chay Hospital said that the progress of the patient is very severe depending on the symptoms, but if not checked and treated, it can seriously affect the health of the eye pair such as corneal damage, visual disturbances, damage to the eye. more severe on the retina causing blindness.

After going to the hospital for an eye exam, the doctor diagnosed post-COVID-19 conjunctivitis. Patients were prescribed and instructed to use antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs in the form of trachea, artificial tears, and daily eye hygiene with physiological saline solution.

According to Dr Nhung, conjunctivitis is a common eye infection, caused by viruses or bacteria, sometimes due to certain allergens, which can be treated and prevented.

“Most of the F0 had symptoms of red eye, the most common being conjunctivitis. The main cause of painful F0, red eyes after recovering from illness is a virus that multiplies in the eye mucosa. Post-COVID-19 conjunctivitis patients usually present with symptoms of redness in the whites of the eyes that are not bothersome, or the eyes may feel sore, itchy or sticky, watery, and teary is accompanied by pain,” said Dr. Nhung.

Dr Nhung also reminded that many studies around the world have shown that some cases of post-COVID-19 patients have more dangerous conditions such as anterior uveitis (inflammation of the front part of the eyeball) caused by anterior uveitis. pathology of the systemic inflammatory response; Retinal microvascular disease is associated with post-recovery coagulopathy.

In addition, COVID-19 can affect the retina and choroid (back of the eyeball) through anemia, vasculitis, damage to retinal blood vessel endothelial cells, causing venous occlusion, retinal vessels, retinal artery occlusion more severe, causing irreversible blindness.

To prevent sequelae and eye diseases after covid-19, Dr. Nhung recommends:

– F0 need to prepare 0.9% physiological saline (10 ml type) to clean the eyes. Physiological salts have the effect of washing away viruses and inflammatory factors from the surface of the eyeball, helping the return of tears and faster recovery in cases of pink eye.

– F0 when infected with COVID-19 or recovering, must limit long-term viewing of cell phones, computers and electronic devices, to avoid eye strain and retinal damage.

– If the eyes look red, swollen, painful right after contracting COVID-19 or after recovering from the disease, it is necessary to consult a doctor, prescribe the use of eye drops, antibiotic eye drops, anti-inflammatories, avoid losing effective time of use and experiencing aggravating disease complications or side effects (such as dry eyes, glaucoma, blindness).

– Drink enough water, take additional vitamins (A, C, E), stay relaxed, optimistic, treat COVID-19 according to doctor’s instructions.

– People with post-COVID-19 red eyes don’t buy their own medicine at all. You should consult a specialist for advice, proper treatment and avoid serious complications.
