The country pays people $ 1,000 if they don’t drive on the street

Recently, the Belgian city government of Brussels has issued a policy to pay 900 euros, equivalent to 988 USD to those who cancel vehicle registration permits. This is one of the policies of the city’s “Bruxell’air” campaign to encourage people to give up cars in favor of more environmentally friendly options such as buses or trains.

The purpose of this campaign is to provide finance for people to switch to buying bicycles or using them to pay for public transport services or even car sharing apps to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. road.

In fact, the campaign to reward car unregistered people has been running since 2006 in Brussels with a bonus of 500 euros, but few people care. In 2018, there were only 900 award recipients, this number is 1,200 in 2019 and 1,049 in 2020.

Now when the wave of environmental protection is rising, the city government has decided to increase the payment amount from 500 Euro to 900 Euro. Unregistered vehicles will not be able to circulate on the street but can still be bought and sold as normal.

In addition, the government will also refuse to help people if the vehicle is damaged in an accident. Previously, each damaged vehicle would receive around 1,000 euros in support.

Small but polluted

Brussels (32.69 km2) is a small city compared to other capitals in the world, but the air quality here is extremely bad, comparable to Paris, Amsterdam or London. The area of Brussels if calculated is 103 times smaller than the area of the capital Hanoi (3,359 km2)

The city government believes that the main cause of this situation is because there are too many private cars, so the “Bruxell’s air” campaign has been carried out.

Of course, not everyone receives 900 Euros, but it depends on each person’s income or even family status. Persons with disabilities will receive the full 900 Euro regardless of income. Meanwhile, single people earning less than 37,600 euros/year or couples earning less than 52,600 euros/year are eligible to receive this amount.

For individuals earning over 75,100 Euro/year or a couple over 90,100 Euro/year, they will only receive 500 Euro.

In addition, this money can only be used for buying bicycle equipment or for public transport, car booking service… but not for other personal expenses. Excess money not used for the above purposes will be returned to the city.
