The fourth dose of vaccine is only effective in the high-risk group

This is the result of a study by Sheba Medical Center, Israel that has just been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Compared with the results of immune production in young and healthy people who received 3 doses of the vaccine, it was found that, fourth dose of vaccine showed little or no improvement in resistance to infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The study also demonstrated that young and healthy people who received 3 doses of the vaccine had a moderate level of immunity.

The study was conducted on 600 volunteers, of which 270 received the fourth dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.

The scientists found no difference in levels of IgG antibodies and levels of virus-neutralizing antibodies, only reaching levels similar to those achieved one month after the third dose.

Professor Gili Regev Yochay, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases Control and Prevention at Sheba Medical Center, confirmed that the rate of infection among those vaccinated fourth booster shot only slightly lower than those in the control group.

However, scientists still emphasize the importance of a third dose for people who have never had COVID-19. For high-risk groups, a fourth dose may protect them from the risk of severe disease.
