The influx of refugees from Ukraine poses a challenge to Europe

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the wave of migrants leaving Ukraine could become “the biggest migration crisis of this century”. To date, more than 3 million Ukrainians have fled the country since fighting broke out on February 24.

By far, the country that receives the most Ukrainian refugees is Poland. The country has received nearly 2 million people from Ukraine. However, the Polish side is also calling on other countries to share the burden.

Polish Prime Minister Andrzej Duda said: “We not only want to help, but above all, we want to ensure good conditions for everyone who comes from Ukraine to our country. To date, almost 2 million Ukrainian refugees have come to our country. We have never been in such a situation and are trying to cope. However, if we don’t get international support, it could turn into a humanitarian disaster.”

In addition to Poland, Ukraine’s neighbors such as Hungary, Moldova, Slovakia and Romania have also received tens to hundreds of thousands of refugees.

Along with receiving, countries in Europe have also taken many measures to support refugees. Poland has set up reception centers along the border with Ukraine to assist refugees with food, shelter and medical care. The country has also begun to issue identification numbers to refugees so they can access social and welfare services and find work easier. In Germany, to receive people from Ukraine, the authorities reopened refugee camps that were used in the period 2015-2016. Germans have also flocked to Berlin’s Central Station to provide food and shelter for the refugees from Poland.

The European Union, for its part, quickly took steps to respond to one of the continent’s fastest-growing crises. One of them is the decision to exempt visas, allowing refugees to live and work in any member country for a period of three years.

However, Ylva Johansson, home affairs officer for the European High Commission, stressed that the “biggest concern” right now is the care of a large number of children. According to her, the important thing that the EU is interested in is creating a certain normality so that children can go to school or be cared for. This will also give parents peace of mind to be able to work and become a part of society.

“We really should invest now so that people can start a normal life as soon as possible, especially focusing on children. Now we have over a million children who have come and it is important to provide a normal life for the children, put them in school or daycare, so that they can have a normal life. I think this is really what we should be focusing on right now,” Ms. Johansson said.

Recently, the European Union announced an initial emergency grant of 500 million euros to help deal with the humanitarian consequences of war. Officials are also working to get more support to help Ukrainian refugees soon integrate.
