Ukraine crisis: Xi wants the US and China to ensure peace

The Chinese president told the US president that the two countries have a responsibility to ensure world peace and that military conflicts like the one in Ukraine “do not benefit” anyone.

CNN quoted information from the White House as saying, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping had an online video conference lasting 1 hour and 50 minutes, starting at 9:03 am Eastern US time (20:03 Vietnam time). Nam) on March 18. This is the first phone conversation between the two heads of state since their bilateral online summit in November 2021.

China’s state broadcaster CCTV quoted Mr. Xi as saying: “Thailand relations cannot reach the stage of military confrontation. Conflict and confrontation do not benefit anyone. Peace and security are not in the interests of anyone. Security is the most valuable treasure of the international community”.

The Chinese leader admitted that the world is “not at peace nor quiet”. China does not want to see the Ukraine crisis, he said.

“As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and the world’s two largest economies, we must not only lead the development of US-China relations in the right direction, but also shoulder international responsibilities and make efforts for the peace and peace of the world,” Xi stressed.

The US side has not yet released the content of the phone call. However, in a statement on March 17, the White House said it was part of efforts to maintain an open line of communication between the US and China. The two leaders are expected to focus on discussing the control of competition between the two countries, Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine and other issues of mutual concern.

According to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, the phone call was also an opportunity for Biden to assess Xi’s stance on the conflict in Ukraine. Washington had previously warned Beijing of consequences if it helped Moscow fend off Western sanctions.

Observers assess that, since the war broke out, China has tried to show a neutral stance. Beijing does not condemn Russia’s actions, and rejects calls from the US and its allies to impose sanctions on Moscow. Chinese diplomats have previously criticized the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), accusing Washington of contributing to the conflict and calling for a diplomatic solution.

The Chinese Embassy in the United States recently denied that Beijing knew in advance that Russia would launch military action against its neighbour. If Beijing had known about it, it would have dissuaded Moscow, the embassy spokesman said.
