After more than a year, China recorded the first Covid-19 death
China’s national health authorities announced that today (March 19) the country has 2 deaths from Covid-19. These are the first deaths from Covid-19 since January 2021 in China.

According to ABC News, both of these cases are in Jilin province, northeast China, bringing the total number of deaths from Covid-19 to 4,683.
China today detected 2,157 new infections in the community, mainly in Jilin. This province has issued a travel ban, those wishing to move to another province must obtain the consent of the police.
China has been applying the “No Covid-19” strategy since the outbreak in Wuhan. The strategy focuses on mass testing and strict lockdowns, with residents barred from leaving their homes until all cases are detected through contact tracing or in isolation.
In practice, this means that the number of infections in China is relatively small because the outbreak will be extinguished quickly as soon as it is detected. This strategy has received widespread support and has prevented a large number of deaths from corona virus in other countries.
Data on Covid-19 in mainland China is calculated separately from that of the Hong Kong special administrative region of the country.
