Musk has long talked about his plans to colonize Mars, and over the years he has made many predictions about when humans might land on the planet. In 2016, he said, “If everything goes according to plan, we should be able to send people to Mars by 2025.”

In 2020, Musk said he hopes to build 1,000 Starships within 10 years to send 1 million people to Mars by 2050. Last year, Musk backtracked on his earlier predictions, saying he “Very confident” SpaceX will send humans to Mars in 2026.
