F0 was negative but still lost sense of smell

Huyen Anh (Cau Giay, Hanoi) was negative 7 days after contracting Covid-19. However, Huyen Anh still has a loss of taste, causing her to eat poorly. She was afraid, so she went online to share and hope to receive help to improve her taste loss. What makes Huyen Anh wonder if she needs to go to the doctor or not.

Similar to the case of Ms. Huyen Anh, Mr. Le Phong (29 years old in Thanh Xuan, Hanoi) also lost his taste and smell despite having a negative rapid test. Phong worries that the loss of smell and taste means that the virus is still present and can become severe at any time.

REMOVEthe villain Truong Huu KhanhVice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City Infectious Association said that loss of taste and smell is characteristic of Covid-19, not a sign of worsening disease.

Loss of taste or smell can be present at the onset of symptoms or near the end of symptoms. There are cases where F0 has been negative and still has a loss of taste and smell. The condition will clear up on its own after a while but is harmless.

The biggest trouble with the loss of taste and smell is that people lose their appetite, eat poorly, and eat everything they eat. To overcome this situation, people should divide their meals and eat foods that are easy to chew, swallow, and digest.

According to Assoc.Prof.Dr.BS Lam Vinh Nien, Head of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, the loss of taste and smell due to Covid-19 will recover on its own, but in a few cases it takes longer. There is currently no specific treatment for this condition.

To improve this condition, people should increase nutrition, adopt a balanced diet, rich in protein, and have enough energy for the recovery period to progress smoothly.

In the diet, priority should be given to eating enough protein. A person weighing about 50 kg needs to eat an average of 200 g of meat and fish a day.

Besides, need to eat 300-400 g of vegetables, every day. If you can’t eat much in each main meal, you need to supplement with snacks, add nutritious foods such as milk, dairy-based dishes.

For people with underlying diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, etc., it is necessary to receive specialized guidance from a doctor or nutritionist on appropriate nutrition. You monitor your weight, if you lose weight, you need to increase your food intake by about 25-30% and increase your protein by 50-85% (meat, fish…) compared to the current one.

Many people eat spices, salt, sugar, too spicy, too hot, too strong… in order to regain their taste and smell. Assoc. Nien recommends that this method has not been shown to be effective and is not good for health.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Lam, Former Deputy Director of the National Institute of Nutrition, said that in order to enhance nutrition for F0 and people who have just recovered from Covid-19, patients need to eat enough 4 groups of substances: carbohydrates (starch), fat, protein, vitamins and minerals. In addition, the patient needs to add a probiotic product (yogurt, drink preparation) to make it more palatable.
