Data.ai’s recent State of Mobile 2022 report said that in 2021, the world spent nearly $4 billion on dating apps. In which, the US, Japan, UK and China are the four markets with the largest number of people spending on dating platforms in 2021.

In terms of downloads, in 2021, Tinder is also the most downloaded application by Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam. For Thailand and Malaysia, the most downloaded dating app in 2021 is Omi, and in Indonesia it’s MiChat.

Further analyzing the trend of using dating apps in Vietnam, Decision Lab’s survey said that 65% of the 1012 Vietnamese respondents who participated in the survey are using at least one dating app. In which, Tinder is the most popular dating app, accounting for about 22%. Followed by messaging applications such as Zalo, Telegram…, accounting for about 21%; Facebook Dating accounts for about 17%.

While Tinder is the favorite choice of millennials (those born between 1981-1996) and urban users, Messaging apps are a bit more popular among Gen X (1965) -1980) and Baby Boomers (1946-1964).

Surprisingly, Vietnamese people use dating apps like Tinder mostly to make new friends, accounting for 48%. Meanwhile, the purpose of dating or looking for a long-term relationship accounted for only 39% and 35%, respectively. In addition, some other purposes of using dating apps were also indicated, such as relationship expansion (34%), and one-night stands (15%).

Regarding the frequency of use, the report estimates that Vietnamese people use dating apps quite often, with nearly 30% of survey respondents using it every day, 19% using it 2-3 times/day. week, 15% use with frequency 6-7 times/week….

The report also said that nearly 60% of participants wanted to chat to get to know each other up to 10 days before deciding to have a first date. Meanwhile, 1 week is the average conversation time before a first date in Vietnam.

The impact of using dating apps, a study by the Pew Research Center (USA) shows that, in addition to positive effects such as helping users easily expand relationships, meet people with similar interests, or allowing people to judge someone before agreeing to meet in person, dating apps can bring a lot of negative effects.

Specifically, experts at the Pew Research Center say, some people feel concerned about issues such as fraud, information leakage or harassment. Accordingly, these people believe, these platforms facilitate superficial relationships rather than meaningful ones.
