“The topic of neutrality mechanism and Ukraine’s non-accession to NATO was one of the key points of the negotiations. Then, The negotiating details begin to concern the security guarantees that Ukraine receives beyond what would have been in the event of its refusal to join NATO,” Medinsky said.

According to Russia’s chief negotiator, Moscow’s demands to “demilitarize and de-fascist” Ukraine remain the subject of controversy between the two sides. He revealed that the representatives of Moscow and Kiev are only “halfway through” in finding a common voice on “demilitarization”, while the Ukrainian side insists that “Nazi fascism of Kiev” does not exist.

However, according to the Guardian newspaper, a negotiator Ukraine denied Mr. Medinsky’s claims. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky and also a member of the Ukrainian negotiating delegation, accused the Moscow representative’s statements about bilateral peace talks as “a plot to incite tension in the media”.

“Our positions have not changed. Ceasefire, withdrawal and strong security guarantees with specific formulas,” Mr. Podolyak wrote on Twitter.

Since the outbreak of hostilities on February 24, the delegations of Russia and Ukraine have held several rounds of negotiations. However, these direct dialogues did not yield any tangible results, except that the two sides agreed to organize humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians from areas of conflict.
