By page 24automatic, The state council of North Rhine-Westphalia, Bremen, or Hamburg intends to partially amend the smoking ban, to prevent drivers and their passengers from smoking in front of pregnant women and children. The law will not prohibit people from traveling alone in a vehicle.

In fact, opening the side window or sunroof is not enough for accompanying passengers to avoid the effects of smoke if the driver smokes. Cigarette smoke can still linger in the car, and will often linger in the cabin or on clothing, creating an obsession for many.

If enacted, the new law would have a fine of $550-3,300 for violators.

Previously, Germany wanted to ban smoking in cars in 2019 but failed. In Western Europe, there is another country that does this, the UK, and has been doing it since 2015 with a ban on smoking if anyone under 18 is in the car. This means that not only the driver, but also anyone in the vehicle, will be fined.
