Too helpless, the British people pour… cooking oil for cars, regardless of the risk that the car may explode

The Daily Mail recently published a clip recorded outside the car park of a Tesco supermarket in Congleton, Cheshire on the afternoon of March 15.

In the video, a man comes out of a supermarket with a cart filled with bottles of vegetable oil. Then, he quietly uncaps the bottles and pours them all into the car’s gas tank.

This odd action makes viewers wonder and doubt about the safety by the fact that vegetable oil cannot refuel new cars. This “trying to eat sticky rice” scene in the context of this high gas price could cause the other car to explode.

One social media user commented: ‘It’s going to be a busy night for the British Automotive Association (AA) as people keep trying to use cooking oil in their modern diesel cars.

Another said: “Don’t put vegetable oil in a car or truck, unless it’s an older diesel car. The only way for cooking oil to work is to convert it into biodiesel using toxic and dangerous chemicals.”

The cooking oil distribution company Cater Oils also confirmed that although cooking oil can be recycled into biodiesel, people “really shouldn’t” directly pour it into cars like the man in the video.

This controversial action quickly attracted the attention of the online community in the context of British people struggling with petrol and diesel prices.

Senior MP Robert Halfon even warned that if petrol continues to skyrocket, Britain may have to “de facto blockade” by preventing people from filling up their gas tanks.

In addition, rising fuel prices have also raised concerns about fuel theft. Rural households hoarding oil in their backyards are becoming the target of thieves who want to take advantage of the opportunity to increase gasoline prices to sell on the black market. Therefore, people are advised to “put fuel and oil tanks in easy-to-see locations”, to prevent theft.

Also according to the Daily Mail, the skyrocketing gas price caused the cases of drivers “swiping” money at gas stations to increase by 215% in the first week of March 2022 compared to the first week of December 2021.

According to the British Petroleum Security Association (Boss), the total damage caused by this form of theft to the UK petroleum industry is estimated to have reached over £100 million, up from £88 million in 2019.

Currently, the police are still taking special measures to reduce crimes at gas stations, including drivers who apply for credit and promise to come back later, but then disappear.

“Record fuel prices make it attractive to criminals not to pay for gas and early reports suggest crime at gas stations has skyrocketed in recent weeks,” said Claire Nichol, Director Boss operator said.
