Less than 10 kilometers from the center of Hue city, King Khai Dinh’s mausoleum was built on the slopes of Chau Chu mountain (in Thuy Bang commune).
King Khai Dinh ascended the throne in 1916, was the 12th king of the Nguyen Dynasty and was the last to build a mausoleum – preparing the eternal resting place of a king.

Thien Dinh Palace is at the highest position and is the main architecture of the mausoleum. This project consists of 5 consecutive parts. On both sides are Ta and Huu Truc rooms for soldiers guarding the mausoleum.
In front is Khai Thanh Palace – the place for the altar and the portrait of King Khai Dinh.
In the middle is Buu Kan, the statue of the king and the grave at the bottom, the innermost is the altar with the tablet of the late king.
The highest artistic value of the mausoleum is the interior decoration of Thien Dinh Palace. The three nave in the palace are decorated with reliefs made of porcelain and colored glass.
In particular, the Buu canopy on a bronze statue, weighing 1 ton, has soft and elegant curves that make viewers feel like it’s made of very gentle silk.
Beneath Buu Canan is a bronze statue of Khai Dinh cast in France in 1922 at the request of the king.
The person who is mainly responsible for creating artistic masterpieces in King Khai Dinh’s mausoleum is artist Phan Van Tac, the author of three of the largest “Cuu Long hidden clouds” frescoes in our country, decorated on three-room ceiling between Thien Dinh palace. Thanks to his contributions and many talented folk artisans of Vietnam, King Khai Dinh’s mausoleum has become the symbol, the pinnacle of the art of shaping crockery and glass.
