5G phones sell more than 4G for the first time

The 5G smartphone market share for the first time reached more than 50%, surpassing 4G phones.

According to Counterpoint’s global statistics for January 2022, smartphone sales 5G reached 51%, while phones supporting 4G connectivity accounted for almost half.

Counterpoint’s monthly tracking chart shows that new 5G smartphones went on sale in mid-2019, then grew sharply in the second half of 2020. In early 2021, sales of 5G phones showed signs of slowing, even slowing. continued to rise to the 50% mark earlier this year.

According to the report, China, Western Europe and North America are the three fastest growing markets, with the 5G mobile phone market share of 84%, 73% and 76% in January, respectively.

Experts say that the emergence of more and more low-cost 5G Android models, along with 5G-enabled iPhones, are the main reasons driving the growth. For example, in China, where the purchase rate of 5G phones is the largest in the world, many manufacturers are willing to offer low-cost 5G phones, as the country accelerates the deployment of next-generation telecommunications networks.

In North America and Western Europe, Counterpoint experts said that the demand for iPhone upgrades by users in the past two years has led to an increase in sales of 5G phones. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series were the first iPhone models to support 5G, and continue to set sales records. In North America, Apple also accounted for more than 50% of 5G smartphone sales in the month.

In markets such as Asia-Pacific, Middle East, and Latin America, sales of 4G smartphones still hold tremendous market share. However, the 5G model priced under 150 USD is said to be a bright spot, enticing users to switch to phones that support the new connectivity.

The low-cost chip race between MediaTek and Qualcomm is also making 5G more accessible to users. Previously, this connection was only available on phones in the $250 and above segment, but has now been reduced to $150. Cheap 5G smartphones ($150-250) accounted for 20% of sales in January.

According to Counterpoint, current 5G-enabled processors are priced starting at $20. When manufacturers can lower prices below this level, 5G smartphones will explode, especially in the popular segment.
