Biden criticizes Chinese and Russian leaders for not coming to COP26

Biden said that China and Russia did not play a leading role in fighting climate change when the leaders of the two countries did not attend the COP26 conference.

“It is understandable that China is trying to assert a new role in the world as a global leader, but it is not emerging,” US President Joe Biden told reporters before leaving the COP26 climate summit summit in Glasgow, Scotland, Nov. 2. .

“This is a big problem they don’t attend. How can they behave like that and claim to be in charge? China not showing up is a mistake. The whole world looks at China and wonders what value they bring,” the US president added.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, the head of the world’s largest carbon emitter, has not left the country since the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020.

Biden took an even tougher stance against Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he met in Geneva, Switzerland, in June 2018. Russia is the world’s fourth-largest carbon emitter.

“The area is completely on fire. He is facing serious climate issues, but he is silent, not saying what he wants to do,” Biden said of his Russian counterpart.

At COP26, Biden pushed for action on climate change, pledging to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2050, a move in stark contrast to former president Donald Trump, who pulled the US out of the Paris climate accord.

The Paris Agreement on climate change was ratified by 195 countries, including the US, in France in December 2015. Countries agreed to reduce CO2 and other emissions from burning fossil fuels, to curb rising global temperatures.

Biden wants to convince countries to set more ambitious and specific targets for reducing carbon emissions. Leverage negotiations are the more attractive commitments of financial support from the US and the approval of drastic policy reforms as examples. Earlier this year, he pledged to take the United States into 2025 to reduce emissions by 50-52% compared to 2005 statistics.

COP26 is the largest and most important climate summit on the planet, organized annually by the United Nations since 1995, bringing together representatives from most countries around the world to discuss climate goals, as well as emission reduction processes. These meetings are officially known as “conferences of the parties” (COP) and are attended by more than 190 members who signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1992. This year’s COP26 runs from October 31 to November 12.
