Discovering… 10 objects that could be the “9th planet”-Information Technology

Sunday, March 20, 2022 08:17 AM (GMT+7)

The new study, although proving that a candidate for the position of the 9th planet of the solar system is not a planet, found up to 10 new candidates.

The project led by astronomer Sigurd Naess from the Center for Computational Astrophysics of the Flatiron Institute (USA) used the 6-meter Atacama Space Telescope (located in Chile) to survey remote regions of the Solar System. Sky.

This telescope is designed to detect the faintest signals left over from the Big Bang, but is also sensitive enough to detect objects in the far reaches of the solar system.

From 2013 to 2019, the telescope scanned about 87% of the southern sky at a distance of 300 to 2,000 astronomical units.

According to Science Alert, the search has yielded up to 3,500 expected candidates. They then screened the 10 most potential candidates for the 9th planet, which will be the target for more detailed studies in the future.

However, the survey also ruled out another good candidate that the study predicted could be the previous 9th planet.

Although to date, no 9th planet has been confirmed, but the hunt for it has yielded many interesting objects in the far reaches of the solar system, such as asteroids. ancient, carrying primitive material when planets like Earth had not yet formed.

While not yet visible, scientists have repeatedly found signs that space rocks in the far reaches of space are impacted by something – be it a small black hole or a giant planet.

If it were there, the 9th planet would have to be 5-10 times larger than Earth and take 10,000-20,000 years to complete one revolution around the Sun.

The study has just been published in The Astrophysical Journal.
