Lost $3,000 vacation due to moldy passport

Bronte Gossling was shocked to have to cancel his nearly USD 3,000 trip to Bali due to a moldy passport that had not been used for a long time.

Bronte Gossling, an Australian tourist, came to Bali for a holiday, after the island was opened to guests and released from isolation from March 14th. He spent nearly 3,000 USD on plane tickets, hotel reservations and the cost of a Covid-19 test. As planned, Bronte went to the airport to depart.

At the check-in counter, he was told he couldn’t get on the plane. “Jetstar ticket counter staff said that the passport page with my portrait had some mildew on it. So I couldn’t get on the plane. I was in shock,” he said. Bronte explained that even though he was on a plane, customs in Bali did not allow entry with such a passport.

Bronte has been keeping afternoons safe in a drawer for the past two years because of the epidemic. He said the passports were rarely used, plus the high humidity when Australia was flooded, causing documents to be damaged. Despite having to cancel the holiday and losing money, Bronte still feels lucky. If he accidentally goes to Bali, he could be trapped there and incur additional fees, before being deported.

Under regulations from 2019, the Indonesian government can fine airlines more than 4,300 USD if they allow passengers to enter the island with damaged passports. Passengers can also be detained at the airport and deported.

Bronte is not the first person to have problems with his passport during his visit to Bali. In 2019, Australian soccer player Sam Kerr was not allowed to board a plane because his passport was torn. Two other tourists, Richard and Ann Lane from Lincolnshire, England, lost nearly $10,000 on their Bali and Malaysia tour booking services due to small holes in their passports.
