PSG lost badly without Messi

MonacoKylian Mbappe and Neymar were silent when PSG lost 0-3 to Monaco in the 29th round of Ligue 1 today, 20 March.

Wissam Ben Yedder’s double and Kevin Volland’s goal helped Monaco suddenly bring down PSG 3-0. This was the fourth straight loss to teacher and student Mauricio Pochettino away from home, in all competitions. PSG is still at the top of the standings with a difference of 15 points compared to Marseille. But more importantly, PSG’s image has fallen apart again after being eliminated by Real Madrid in the 1/8 Champions League round on March 9.

“Last week, PSG fans booed Messi,” said Henry Amazon Prime after the game on 20/3. “How can they boo the greatest player in history? Messi has provided the most assists in Ligue 1 this season. Today without him PSG didn’t create chances.”

This was only PSG’s fourth defeat in Ligue 1 this season, but three of them have come in the last month. PSG also suffered their heaviest defeat since April 15, 2019, when they lost 5-1 to hosts Lille.

Monaco have also shown that they are PSG’s best game, having won three of the last five confrontations. The home side opened the scoring in the 25th minute, when Youssouf Fofana found Yedder’s one-touch shot into the near corner. The PSG defender is not close to the two Monaco strikers at this stage.

There was Mbappe and Neymar on the pitch, but PSG couldn’t force the game. The two away team stars not only died, but took turns getting yellow cards within a minute at the start of the second half.

Not only empty-handed, PSG also conceded two more goals. Defender Ruben Aguilar joined the fight and then reached out for Volland to hold the ball gently into the near corner, countering the judgment of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Nobody installed Volland in this phase either.

PSG only has one player registered by the agency score a goal Scoring over 7 points in this match is Marco Verratti. But in the 81st minute, the midfielder lost the ball dangerously in the middle of the pitch, helping Monaco to quickly counter-attack. Center back Presnel Kimpembe was forced into a foul from behind Volland in the box, and the referee immediately awarded the penalty. Captain Yedder shot 11m and sank into the left corner, not going too fast. Goalkeeper Donnarumma guessed the right direction and touched the ball, but still couldn’t save.

PSG only has one arena up for grabs this season, which is Ligue 1. Marseille or Nice could close the gap to 12 points if they haven’t made it this round. But PSG have a chance to revive their spirits when they return to the Parc des Princes to face Lorient in the next round on April 3.
