The girl “crossed the door of death” after a terrible plane crash
One day in 1990, the whole family of Tulsi Vagjiani (then 10 years old) from the town of Stratford, London (England), boarded a plane with hundreds of other passengers to start the journey to the city of Bangalore, state of Karnataka (India).
This was a flight that was not part of their plan. And the cruel fate took the whole Tulsi family, leaving her with terrible pain because of almost full-body burns.
At that time, Indian Airlines flight 605 suddenly crashed while preparing to land at the airport in Bangalore. The plane burst into flames on impact. The crash left 92 people dead – Tulsi was one of 54 who survived. Tulsi’s parents Dhanji and Premila, and Tulsi’s brother Kamlesh were both killed in the crash.
Tulsi was lucky to save her life but suffered severe burns and since then, she has had to undergo many skin graft surgeries.
Tulsi was the only one in his family to survive.
Recently, sharing with My London news, Tulsi told about her last memory of the horrible plane crash that killed her whole family.
The first thing Tulsi recalls after the accident was hearing her grandmother’s voice while she was in the hospital. The woman (now 41) told MyLondon: “We were traveling but left her at home that time and it turned out to be a stroke of luck. She said I was the victim of an accident. My plane, my parents and my brother are gone, and my face has changed.”

Tulsi’s eyes were bandaged and she was forced to take sedation. Doctors were always on duty to reassure the girl at that time.
Tragically and unfortunately, the Tulsi family didn’t even plan to take this flight in the first place. Their luggage got lost on the way back to the UK and Tulsi’s dad thought they could go to Bangalore to get it after 3 months the whole family was in India.
But it was not until the doctors removed the bandages from her eyes so Tulsi could look in the mirror that she could understand what had happened. The plane crash left her with half burns and she had to undergo 50 surgeries to “reshape” her life.
She said: “The doctors were really afraid to let me see what I looked like then. They gave me the mirror and I remember thinking that someone had painted that face. When I look down at my hand, there are metal rods sticking out of my fingers to keep my fingers straight.”
But the pain did not stop there, when returning to a normal life, Tulsi had to face bullying because of her appearance.
She explained: “It was only when I left the hospital and people were staring at me that the harsh reality officially hit. The hospital turned out to be a safe place. But when I left, I became a victim. of bullies. People stare at me and treat me like a monster.”
For years, Tulsi wished she could die with her family – rather than live with a scarred appearance.
But despite the bullies, Tulsi still has really good friends. Now, she works as a motivational speaker – which she says is “really passionate”.
Tulsi is now an inspiration to many people in similar situations.
Tulsi says: “Now I have mastered myself. I am the beautiful version of me, not someone else’s. I don’t live up to anyone’s standards. My confidence doesn’t come overnight but I am me and here I am. What is ‘beautiful’ anyway? No one can define it exactly.”
