The reason why many people avoid Covid-19 even though Omicron spreads so quickly

When it hit the United States, the Omicron variant spread like wildfire. It is estimated that by the end of this epidemic, about 50-75% of Americans will be infected with Covid-19.

The Omicron variant showed the ability to cause breakthrough infections regardless of vaccination status. This has led to fears that everyone will get the SARS-CoV-2 virus at some point. However, Covid-19 vaccine remains highly effective in its primary purpose of preventing hospitalization and mortality.

Besides, public health experts say, not everyone will get the disease. So far, there are a number of reasons people can avoid infection, including behaviors such as wearing masks, social distancing, vaccination rates and possibly even genetics.

The reason some people have not been infected with Covid-19

Doctors say there are a number of reasons why millions of Americans have not yet contracted the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

One of the reasons is that people take the right precautions to reduce the risk. “There are people who don’t get sick because they’re extremely cautious,” says Dr. Mark Siedner, of Harvard Medical School.

“They may be people who mostly live at home, have little contact with others, or are especially careful with wearing masks and social distancing.”

These people are more likely to have had vaccinations, including booster shots. The impact of vaccination rates on preventing Covid-19 infection among Americans cannot be ignored, experts say.

Genetics may also play a role. Dr. Stuart Ray, Johns Hopkins University, information, some people are at high risk of HIV infection but actually do not get the disease.

“People who have a mutation in a certain receptor, which is associated with not being infected with HIV,” explains Dr. Ray.

Although a clear gene has not been identified, Dr Ray thinks that some people are genetically less susceptible to Covid-19 as a possible hypothesis.

Can’t avoid being infected with Covid-19?

Experts do not believe that infection with Covid-19 is inevitable.

Dr Jonathan Grein said: “The pandemic has lasted for two years and a significant number of the population is still uninfected. This is proof that not everyone will get the disease.”

“We identified vaccination as the single most important factor in determining how protected a person is.”

However, Dr. Ray thinks that unvaccinated Americans who have not yet contracted the SARS-CoV-2 virus will eventually contract the disease. “As these variants become more and more infectious, the likelihood that those people will become infected seems to become clearer,” the expert shared.
