Rumors about changing chips for the iPhone 14 series have sparked a lot of controversy about Apple products.

Every year, Apple announces a new generation of iPhone. Sometimes they can have completely new designs or special tweaks. But what makes the public confirm for sure is that the new iPhone will have a new chip. However, recent rumors suggest some patterns iPhone 14″ will keep the A15 Bionic chip from the “family” iPhone 13″. Why did Apple do that?

Rumors about the chip of the iPhone 14 Series

Famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo confirmed, only the high-end iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models will have the new A16 chip, while the mid-range iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will be equipped with the A15 Bionic chip.

iPhone 14 will only use A15 Bionic chip?

9to5Mac corroborated Mr. Kuo’s report. At the same time, sources from Mr. Kuo and 9to5Mac also claim that all new iPhones will have 6GB of RAM (currently the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini only have 4GB of RAM).

Expected chip of iPhone 14 quartet:

● iPhone 14 (6.1 inch screen) – A15 chip

● iPhone 14 Max (6.7 inch screen) – A15 chip

● iPhone 14 Pro (6.1 inch screen) – A16 chip

● iPhone 14 Pro (6.7 inch screen) – A16 chip

In fact, the company used to use old chips for new iPhones, and it was all a marketing tactic.

The strategy behind Apple’s chip name

Ever since the iPhone 4 was introduced in 2010 with Apple’s first custom chip called “A4”, new chips have always followed the same letter: A5, A6, A7,…

In 2012, however, Apple created an even more powerful chip for the new iPad 3. This is the first tablet with a high resolution Retina display. The chip is completely based on the A5 chip of the iPhone 4s and iPad 2 but the new version has a quad-core GPU while the original has a dual-core GPU.

iPhone 14 Pro will have design changes.

To distinguish the new chip from the old and emphasize the power, “Apple House” has named this chip A5X. Since then, all new chips made specifically for the iPad have had an “X” in the name as a way to indicate that they are faster due to the more powerful GPU and more RAM. This strategy was used until 2018, when Apple released the third-generation iPad Pro with the A12X chip.

In 2020, instead of creating a more powerful version of the A13 chip for the new iPad Pro, Apple just reused the same A12X chip from the 2018 iPad Pro along with an additional GPU core. This change makes the chip called “A12Z Bionic”.

M1 and a new era for Apple Silicon

Finally, when “Bad Apple” decided to switch Macs from Intel processors to its silicon, it continued the naming strategy with the M1 chip.

The M1 is essentially the A14X, as the chip found inside the latest iMac and MacBook Air is essentially the iPhone 12’s A14 chip with more CPU and GPU cores. The company then created more powerful versions of the M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra, all based on the same A14 chip.

The name “M1” has become much more attractive than the A14X chip. In other words, Apple uses marketing to its advantage to make even the smallest changes to make them more powerful and distinctive products. And this will apply to the iPhone 14 Series.

Which chip will be in the iPhone 14?

Apple currently has two different versions of the A15 Bionic chip. The regular A15 Bionic chip used in the iPhone 13 and iPad mini 6 models has a six-core CPU and a five-core GPU with 4GB of RAM. However, the samples iPhone 13 Pro features an improved A15 Bionic chip with a six-core GPU and 6GB of RAM.

This extra GPU core gives the iPhone 13 Pro about 34% more graphics power than the iPhone 13, 6GB RAM will allow more background applications to run.

Currently, the technology world still does not understand why Apple is using the A15 chip in the next-generation iPhone. This could be related to a shortage of components or the company realizing that consumers won’t notice the difference between the new A16 chip and the current A15.

However, the fact that the iPhone 14 pair will have an A15 chip does not mean that they will have an A15 chip like the iPhone 13. This chip could come with a more core GPU and 6GB of RAM, which could be called A15X – like the chip A12Z in iPad Pro 2020.

Even the “Apple House” can call this chip A16 Pro with a different architecture, like the Mac chip line. Before that, the Apple Watch Series 7 had the same CPU as the Apple Watch Series 6, but the chips were named “Apple S6” and “Apple S7” due to minor internal changes.

Whatever the chip inside the iPhone 14 generation, they will be completely new and groundbreaking products from the company.
