CNN: The Russian army may not win the battle in Mykolaiv

Frontline Mykolaiv-Kherson

This was the last bus evacuation from the furthest point Kiev holds near Kherson – the first Ukrainian city that the Russia controlled. The car has only room for people to stand – and the elderly are loaded onto the truck.

The panic is real because at any moment shelling can happen – what residents believe is dropping cluster munitions on the village of Posad-Pokrovske, in southern Ukraine.

As the two-car convoy advanced on the road toward the city of Mykolaiv (known as Nikolaiyev in Russia), the shells once again covered the horizon with a cloud of black smoke.

Air strikes and shelling are what the people of Posad-Pokrovske have witnessed in the past two weeks. Ukrainian marines are trying to hold the last settlement located near Kherson airport.

The Russians were still vague about the location of the Ukrainian side, but their objective was clear – the Kherson airfield, which was already in use by the Russians and was heavily damaged by Ukrainian shelling.

The road between the strategic port city of Mykolaiv and Russian-controlled Kherson is a testament to the resilience of the Ukrainians and the slowness of the Russians to seize the advantages.

Ukrainian forces are in control of a 40-kilometer road between the suburbs of the two cities – although this is easily reversed, this shows the limits of the Russians at the end of the logistics chain, as well as their strength. fighting of the Ukrainians in Mykolaiv.

Posad-Pokrovske has almost become a pile of rubble.

The Russians will not give up

The wreckage of Ukrainian armored vehicles scattered outside Posad-Pekrovske and along the road shows the accuracy of Russian artillery and rockets. Ukrainian artillery is said to be also active, only recently firing north of Kherson.

But in Mykolaiv, advances on the Ukrainian side temporarily dispel anxiety and revitalized the city. Shops have reopened and city chief Vitaly Kim, who regularly issues warnings of hostilities, has been more relaxed.

For his birthday last week, Mr. Kim was presented with a trophy from the Russians, a convertible motorized with a machine gun. He and his police chief happily drove around the city.

And on March 20, Kim urged people to collect the bodies of Russian soldiers, noting that there were hundreds of bodies scattered throughout the area.

But everything comes with a price – on the morning of March 18, massive rocket explosions tore through two military installations near the center of Mykolaiv. The Ukrainian military has not released the exact number of people killed, but the number is believed to be in the tens.

Shelling continued into the weekend – with Saturday’s sunset (March 19) lit by marker fire and at least eight shells hitting a target south of the city.

The Russians may be at a disadvantage on the battlefield – but they will do all they can to crush what they can’t have.
