Finland suggests alternatives to joining NATO

According to Finnish President Niinistö, Finland has two security options: Joining NATO or forge closer ties with the US and Sweden.

Mr. Niinistö said that while joining NATO “probably puts an end to some of our concerns”, there are also risks that Finland must acknowledge, including an escalation of tensions in Europe.

However, President Sauli Niinistö stressed, no matter what, Finland is now ready to change to suit the current situation.

“First, we will see if there are other solutions instead of continuing the situation as it is. All alternatives must have the definite benefit of improving our security. Or We have to make sure we maintain stability and live in a secure environment.”

According to Sauli Niinistö, closer ties with the US and Sweden were discussed in recent exchanges with the leaders of these countries, including a brief meeting between the President of Finland and Mr. US President Joe Biden at the White House in early March. At this meeting, cooperation between Sweden – Finland – the US was discussed.

Historically, neither Sweden nor Finland are allied, but have moved closer to NATO as upgraded members of NATO’s Partnership for Peace programme. The two countries also regularly participate in NATO-led exercises and contribute to the alliance’s overseas operations. In recent months, the discussion about the two countries joining NATO has heated up again.

However, leaders in both countries are cautious. Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson has previously said that joining NATO would only “destabilize the security situation in Europe”.
